Since the current political situation is not quite thrilling enough, we decided to rent All the President's Men tonight... that of course led to a couple of hours on Wikipedia. We were particularly interested in what happened to the various players once they got out of prison.
One interesting tidbit concerns G. Gordon Liddy, who was one of the chief operatives of the Watergate scandal and smear campaign against the Democrats. It turns out that Liddy is still alive and is a somewhat successful talk radio show host... and an occasional panel guest on none other than Fox News.
Most interesting was a quote from his "old friend" John McCain while appearing on Liddy's radio show late last year:
"I'm proud of you, I'm proud of your family... It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great."
Let's just review the principles and philosophies that G. Gordon Liddy adhered to:
1. Masterminded Watergate break-in of DNC headquarters.
2. Sentenced to 20 years in prison for conspiracy, illegal wiretapping, and burglary (served five).
3. Admitted to putting together plans for a potential assasination of investigative journalist Jack Anderson.
4. Said this after Waco in 1994: "Now if the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms comes to disarm you and they are bearing arms, resist them with arms. Go for a head shot; they're going to be wearing bulletproof vests. ... Kill the sons of bitches."
If this isn't domestic terrorism, I don't know what is.
